Incubator Start-Up

Before switching on the incubator, it is important to find a suitable location. An ideal location is an unused bedroom, with the curtains closed and any heating turned off.  Locating it in an environment such as a garden shed can harm incubation as the temperatures may fluctuate.  Ideal temperature is of the room somewhere between 18°C to 25°C.

Make sure that the machine is not exposed to direct sun light or placed next to heat sources such as radiators, stoves, etc.

Positioning the Incubator

Place the incubator on a flat wooden table. The base must rest directly on the table in order to prevent any obstruction of the ventilation holes.  The table should be stable to prevent any sudden rocking or shaking during incubation.

Humidity Reservoir

Pour luke-warm water into water reservoir of the incubator, taking care to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Do this slowly, taking care not to allow the water to overflow from the basin.

24 Hour Stability Test

Switch on the incubator and leave it run at least 24 hours to make sure all is running ok and temperature is maintained.  A good incubator will come to working temperature very quickly, usually well within 1 hour, however we recommend leaving for one day to ensure even heat throughout the entire incubator.

During Incubation

Do not cover the incubator or keep it in a box whilst in use. This would prevent the air exchange in the incubator, necessary for the embryo development that takes place through the ventilation holes.

Take Away Tips

  • An unused bedroom is an ideal location for you incubator.
  • Leave the incubator run for a day before placing any eggs in it.
  • Embryos need air.  Ensure ventilation holes are clear from obstruction.
